OMG! My first 2 days on Delivery Suite were...well...sweet! I got to see 2 vaginal births on the first day and 2 casareans on the second day! I didnt pass out or puke and I still managed to scoff down 2 chicken legs on my break (nothing puts me off food, lol).
But one thing I did notice and in fact I've been noticing it a while back when I was in the paediatric department is the way of the races. Now I may start a debate here and by all means bring it because it would be interesting to discuss, but Ive found in my short time of being in the Maternity world that black men just aren't interested in the pregnancy life. But I can't say all black men. Because some (mainly the ones with white women) turn up to the scans and urine checking and labour. But most DON'T!
I've been watching...and watching and if a black woman is in labour or just coming to get her blood pressure checked 97% of the time she is by herself or with her mum! Hardley ever is the partner/boyfriend/husband/sperm donor with her. I think in the time that I've been there, I've seen about 3 couples, 3 black men with their pregnant 'other' at the birth. Otherwise the sista's are defo doing it for themselves.
Why is that?
What can change that?
I dont even think its anything to do with marriage because most african women are married but they are still labouring on all on their J's! (lonesome!)
Muslim/Hindu women: Husbands are present to rub their backs or just watch them scream their heads off. But they are there
White/Foreign women: Their husbands are there, watching and waiting, holding their hands and pacing up and down.
Somali women: husbands are there too.
I find it so sad. I was alone (well with my mum) during my whole pregnancy and labour. My boyfriend of 2 and a half years had gone for a run when I told him I was knocked up and didnt return until 3 years later. My friend is pregnant with her second child to the same man and he feels it 'pressing' to go to St Lucia around the time of his childs birth!!! What is it about pregnancy and black men that they can't stick around??? They helped make them but when it comes to being involved they just arent interested.
If you know of anyone who is not like this please let me know, so I dont lose faith in my brothers!
